Our HistoryThe National Council of Negro Women, Inc. was founded in 1935 by Mary McLeod Bethune, an influential educator and activist. SGV-NCNW was chartered in La Puente, CA on June 6, 1990. The service area includes cities in Southern California within Los Angeles, Riverside, and San Bernardino counties. There were 54 Charter Members, most of whom were from St. Stephen Baptist Church. As organizer and 1st President of the Section, Dr. Dorothy Shepherd and the charter members began their journey, making a difference in the San Gabriel Valley Area communities.
