About the SGV-NCNW Young Legends Scholarship Fund
The Jenkins Baughman Family Scholarship was created to honor the late Lilian Jenkins, a loving grandmother who was raised in the harsh realities of the segregated Jim Crow Era. She bestowed the sentiment of the importance of education on her eight children. Lilian Jenkins only had a 4 th grade education, but she embodied the seeds of courage and determination that have been passed on from generation to generation. Her granddaughters, Dr. Lynnette Jenkins and Dr. Lisa Baughman now carry her legacy. They bear the mantle of educational empowerment by sowing the seed of opportunity in the form of an educational scholarship.
The Jenkins Baughman family believes education is crucial to the elevation and liberation of Black people and is vital to the growth and future of every community. The recent US landmark decision by the Supreme Court to dismantle Affirmative Action highlights the undeniable truth that Black/African American students still face many barriers to accessing higher education, leading to gaps in degree attainment and underrepresentation in many advanced fields. This has resulted in wealth disparities that are prevalent in Black communities. This scholarship seeks to invest in the future of Black students and the communities they will serve. Any Black, African American or BIPOC undergraduate student may apply for this scholarship. Members of the Jenkins Baughman family are Legacy Life Members of NCNW.
