STEAM Education

PictureCaltech Make a Difference Day
SGV-NCNW aligns with the national organization's efforts to create a more inclusive and holistic approach to providing Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) education for communities of color. To achieve this goal, we collaborate with local universities to offer:
  • Math and Science tutoring throughout the academic year
  • Coding workshops to teach students basic coding skills while building fun video games and apps and on-campus tours.
  • Summer engineering camps that introduce students to engineering and technology careers through interactive science projects, workshops, and activities such as math triathlon.
Through its monthly Young Legends meetings, SGV-NCNW solicits industry technologists to conduct workshops on alternative energy sources, medicine, cloud computing, and graphic design, to name a few. The section also partners with local universities and organizations committed to promoting student interest in STEAM. The goal is that students will be aware of STEAM's role in everyday life, improve STEAM academic grades, primary in STEAM fields in college, and ultimately seek employment.
Prior to the COVID-19 years, SGV-NCNW held two (2) Youth Technology Conferences attended by over 300 students from Southern CA.  We hope to continue that practice in the coming year.
In 2023, SGV-NCNW provided financial support to the HBCUs and encouraged our students to participate in visits to HBCUs.

COVID-19/Good Health WINs Initiative
SGV-NCNW has partnered with its national counterpart and SoCal NCNW to promote Good Health WINS. These advocates recognize the significance of immunizations and are striving to establish a foundation for good health. They aim to achieve this by minimizing health disparities, expanding vaccination opportunities, spreading awareness about vaccinations, and identifying the reasons behind vaccine hesitancy.

Civic Engagement

The Social Justice Committee of the National Council of Negro Women, Inc. is dedicated to empowering local sections in fostering civic engagement within their communities and advocating for policies that enhance the well-being of women and families of African descent. SGV-NCNW is committed to supporting this mission by offering a range of programs and workshops. Explore the diverse initiatives provided by SGV-NCNW, including:

This play highlighted a few of the women who wanted to be heard and who wanted to make a difference in the movement.  Watch the video.
